Previously: When the empire's strongest warrior failed to draw the legendary blade, a ragged outcast stepped forward to claim his destiny, uncovering a truth that would shatter a kingdom.

The Betrayal of Blood

With a single, fluid motion, Arthur pulled. The legendary sword slid from the split boulder as easily as a whisper, the ringing of ancient steel echoing through the damp canyon. The golden light radiating from the blade illuminated the stunned faces of the troop. Borin fell to his knees, his heavy broadsword slipping from his grasp as he stared in absolute horror.

"That is impossible,"
Borin whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief.
"Only the blood of the true king can draw it..."

Before Arthur could even marvel at the weight of the weapon in his hands, a cold voice shattered the silence.

"Seize the thief!"
roared Lord Thomas, the man Arthur had called "father" his entire life. Thomas stepped forward, his face pale with rage rather than pride. The warriors, breaking from their stupor, drew their weapons and surrounded Arthur, their iron spears pointing directly at his chest.

Lord Thomas walked up to Arthur, his eyes burning with a deep, venomous hatred. He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"You were never supposed to touch that sword, Arthur,"
Thomas hissed, his breath hot against the boy's cheek.
"I spent fifteen years hiding who you really are. I claimed you were a bastard orphan so my own son, Borin, could take the throne. I will not let a stray dog ruin my family's destiny."

The truth hit Arthur harder than any physical blow. He wasn't a worthless orphan saved out of charity. He was the rightful heir to the kingdom, hidden away and abused so that Thomas's biological son could usurp his birthright. Borin stood up, drawing his heavy blade with a cruel, desperate smile.

"Give me the sword, little brother,"
Borin sneered, stepping closer.
"Or we will carve it from your dead hands."
Arthur gripped the glowing hilt tighter, realizing that his family had never loved him—they had only been hiding from him.
