Exposed Before High Society

The glittering crystal chandeliers of the Sterling Estate illuminated a room filled with the city’s most affluent families. It was the annual charity gala, a night of performative generosity and deep-seated vanity. Standing near the edge of the ballroom was Clara, dressed in a simple, modest white silk shirt and dark trousers. She didn't belong in this world of silk and sequins anymore. Her presence alone was an eyesore to her stepmother and stepsister, Victoria, who wore a lavish grey sequined gown.

Victoria had spent the entire evening whispering venomous rumors about Clara's sudden return after five mysterious years. Deciding that whispers weren't enough, Victoria marched over to Clara, her eyes flashing with malice. With a sudden, violent tug, she pulled down the collar of Clara's white shirt, exposing the deep, jagged, X-shaped scars that marred the flesh of her back.

"Look at the freak! Just scars!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing across the silent ballroom.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Guests recoiled in feigned disgust, murmuring behind their expensive satin fans. Clara froze, her hands clenching into fists as the cold air hit her scarred skin. Before she could pull her shirt back up, her father, Thomas Sterling, stepped forward in his tailored tuxedo. Instead of defending his daughter, his face twisted in embarrassment and anger.

"Security, remove her immediately!" Thomas shouted, pointing a trembling finger toward the exit. "We will not have our family name dragged down by this embarrassment!"

But before the security guards could reach her, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open. A tall, imposing figure stepped into the light. It was General James Vance, a highly decorated military commander whose chest was covered in medals. The room fell into a dead, reverent silence. Victoria smirked, assuming the General would be appalled. Instead, the General marched directly past Thomas and Victoria, stopping right in front of Clara. He snapped his arm up into a perfect, crisp salute.

"Captain Sterling. Welcome home," the General said, his voice ringing with absolute respect.
