Sensing the weight of the moment, Ashley quickly slipped the folded paper into her apron pocket and retreated to the empty staff breakroom. With trembling fingers, she unfolded the note. Inside lay a faded photograph of a handsome young man with the exact same emerald-green eyes as her own—it was her father, who had supposedly abandoned her family when she was a toddler. Beneath the photo, a message was written in elegant, shaky handwriting.

"My sweet Ashley," the note read. "I am Gertrude, your grandmother. Your father never abandoned you. He was blackmailed and run out of town by the greedy man who stole our family's land. That man is Mr. Henderson, the owner of this very diner. I have spent years searching for you to set things right."

Ashley’s breath caught in her throat. Before she could process the shocking revelation, the breakroom door slammed open. Mr. Henderson stood there, his face contorted in his usual harsh scowl. He immediately noticed the paper in her hand and snatched it away with a cruel sneer.

"What is this trash?" Mr. Henderson barked. But as his eyes scanned the words, his face drained of color. "Where did you get this?" he hissed.

"The woman in the booth," Ashley said, her voice rising. "She is my grandmother! You lied to my family!"

Mr. Henderson crumpled the note and shoved it into his pocket, his eyes flashing with malice.

"She's a delusional trespasser," he spat. "And you are fired. Get out before I call the police on both of you."

Ashley rushed out into the dining room, only to find two police officers already walking through the entrance, called by Mr. Henderson moments earlier. He pointed a shaking finger at Gertrude, demanding her arrest for vagrancy and theft. Realizing she had to act, Ashley stepped directly between the officers and the frightened elderly woman.
