Previously: When Police Captain Sarah stood guard over young Chloe in her hospital room, she never expected the girl's violent attacker to breach security—forcing her into a desperate fight for survival.

The Poison in the Ranks

The hospital corridor erupted into a chaotic symphony of shouting voices and squealing sneakers on linoleum. Sarah pressed her advantage, driving Mark against the heavy drywall of the hallway. The SWAT officer, recovering from the initial surprise, slammed his weight into Mark’s side, finally pinning the thrashing man to the floor. Even as the zip-ties bit into his wrists, Mark’s wild eyes remained fixed on the door of Room 412, his voice hoarse and dripping with malice.

"You can't protect her forever, Captain!" Mark spat, a bloody grin spreading across his face. "She knows what she saw, and my partners aren't going to let her speak! You're already out of time!"

Sarah felt a chill run down her spine. Mark wasn't just a rogue abuser; he was part of something much larger. She looked down at him, her voice cold as ice. "Who put you up to this, Mark? How did you bypass the security elevator?" she demanded, but Mark only laughed, a sound that sent shivers through the gathering crowd of nurses and security guards.

Leaving the suspect in the custody of the backup officers who were now flooding the hallway, Sarah rushed back into the room to check on Chloe. The young girl was still trembling, her knuckles white as she clutched the hospital blanket. Sarah knelt by the bedside, taking Chloe's shaking hands in her own. "He's in custody, Chloe. But I need you to tell me the truth. Why is he so desperate to silence you?" she asked softly.

Chloe swallowed hard, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. She looked around the room as if the walls themselves had ears.

"It's not just Mark," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible. "He has people inside your department, Captain. The night he hurt me, I saw him handing a briefcase of cash to a high-ranking officer. I have the ledger that proves everything. If they find it, they'll kill me."
