The dawn air hung heavy with the scent of salt and smoke. A dense sea fog, a ghostly shroud, clung to the coastline, battling the infernal glow emanating from the seaside villa. It was a multi-story mansion, once a symbol of opulence, now a pyre against the steel-blue sky. Thick, black smoke billowed upwards, a dark flag of destruction. Below, on the groaning wooden planks of the private pier, the Atlantic tide surged, its rhythmic assault a counterpoint to the crackling inferno. Tangled fishing nets, bleached by the sun and sea, lay strewn about, alongside rusted mooring cleats that glistened with sea spray. The rain-slicked driveway, a dark ribbon of tarmac, reflected the dancing orange flames, while the distant wail of sirens grew closer, a mournful chorus beneath the roar of the ocean and the thunderous collapse of burning timbers.

A Father's Arrogance

Victoria Sterling, fifty-two years of age, stood at the entrance of his private pier, a figure of rigid contempt. His silver-streaked hair was slicked back, accentuating his predatory cheekbones and the sneer that twisted his thin lips. Clad in an immaculate charcoal cashmere overcoat, draped over a tailored suit, his posture was one of unyielding defiance. His expensive leather Oxfords were planted wide, mirroring the flashing red emergency lights that strobed across his face. He watched, with cold amusement, as the first fire truck arrived, its lights painting the scene in a hellish glow.

“Move your filthy fire trucks off my private pier immediately,” Victoria commanded, his voice dripping with venom, “or I’ll strip your department’s entire municipal budget by noon!”

Beside him, Chief Miller, a man accustomed to command, remained silent, his jaw clenched so tightly it threatened to shatter. The cold sea spray that misted his face seemed to have no effect. Victoria, unfazed by the escalating inferno behind him, gestured dismissively over his shoulder as the villa’s roof beams gave way with a violent eruption of sparks and embers.

“Nothing inside that burning heap is worth scratching my Italian stone tiles!” he sneered, his nostrils flaring with disdain.

Chief Miller’s eyes narrowed into furious slits, the ember sparks dusting his helmet visor like malevolent fireflies. He remained a statue of restrained rage, his silence a deafening roar against Victoria’s callous indifference.
