The Secret Inside the Steel

A suffocating silence fell over the grand ballroom. The clinking of champagne glasses ceased instantly. Edward froze, the silver microphone slipping slightly in his hand, sending a brief, high-pitched screech through the speakers. William’s face turned an ashen gray, his wealthy composure completely shattering as he stared at the open safe. Inside the glowing blue compartment lay a single, dust-covered leather journal and a small black flash drive.

"That's impossible,"
Edward muttered, his voice trembling as he stepped toward the safe.
"This system was locked with a military-grade master key. Nobody has that code!"

Toby reached his small hand inside, his fingers brushing past the cold metal to retrieve the journal.

"My father had it,"
Toby said, his voice growing stronger.
"Arthur Vance. He built this safe. He built this entire company before you two stole it from him."

The crowd gasped. Murmurs rippled through the elite guests like wildfire. Five years ago, Arthur Vance, the brilliant founder of Vance Securities, had mysteriously vanished. Edward and William had quickly stepped into the power vacuum, claiming Arthur had embezzled millions and fled the country. They had dragged his name through the mud, leaving his wife and young son, Toby, in absolute poverty.

William lunged forward, his hands reaching desperately for the journal in Toby's grasp.

"Give me that! You're trespassing, you little thief!"
he snarled, his polite facade entirely gone.

But Toby stepped back, clutching the journal tightly to his chest.

"You told my mom he ran away,"
Toby cried, tears finally spilling down his dirt-smudged cheeks.
"But he didn't. He knew you were planning to get rid of him. So he locked the truth in his final masterpiece, knowing that only his family could ever unlock it. The code was my birthdate and his favorite lullaby's notes translated to numbers. He told me if anything ever happened to him, I had to come here."
