Previously: When a wealthy man tried to kick a poor child out of his garden party, the boy produced a faded photograph that instantly shattered his perfect, privileged world.

The Ghost of the Past

The garden party fell into a stunned silence. William stood frozen, the faded photograph trembling in his hand. The image was undeniable; it was a snapshot of a lifetime he had abandoned for wealth and prestige. Looking down at the young boy, Bobby, William saw his own eyes staring back at him. The truth hit him like a physical blow. He had a son, and the boy's mother was Claraβ€”the woman he had left behind ten years ago under pressure from his ruthless father.

Ignoring the whispers of his guests and the sharp, demanding voice of his wife, Victoria, William grabbed Bobby's hand. "Where is she?" he demanded, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in years.

Bobby led him to his luxury sports car, and they sped away from the estate, leaving the high-society gathering in complete disarray. They drove deep into the industrial district, where the gleaming skyscrapers gave way to crumbling brick tenements. Bobby led William up a dark, narrow staircase that smelled of dampness and neglect.

When Bobby pushed open the door to a cramped, single-room apartment, William's heart shattered. Lying on a thin mattress on the floor was Clara. She was terribly thin, her skin pale and translucent, coughing weakly. When she saw William, a faint, tearful smile appeared on her face.

"I didn't want to ruin your life, William,"
she whispered weakly.
"But I am dying, and Bobby has no one else."

Before William could answer, the door was thrown open. Victoria stood there, flanked by two private security guards. She looked at the squalor with utter disgust before glaring at William.

"If you give these parasites a single cent of our family's money, I will divorce you and leave you with absolutely nothing,"
she threatened coldly.
"Choose right now: your luxury life, or this gutter."
