A Poor Boy Exposed My Wife’s Cruel Secret About Our Daughter’s Blindness
Previously: When young Ethan disrupted a luxury family gathering to reveal that little Sophie wasn't actually blind, Arthur uncovered a web of lies woven by his own wife, Clara.
The Bitter Illusion
Arthur felt a cold dread wash over him as Sophie’s words echoed in his ears. He looked down at the bottle, then up at Clara, whose elegant composure was rapidly disintegrating. She rushed down the stairs, the silk of her peach gown rustling frantically against the stone.
"Arthur, don't listen to this street urchin!" Clara cried, her voice high and strained. "He's trying to extort us! Sophie is sick, and that is her prescribed medication. Give that back to me right now!"
But Arthur held the bottle out of her reach, his eyes narrowing as he noticed the raw panic in his wife's eyes. "If this is her prescription, Clara, why is it in an unlabelled bottle? And why does Sophie say it makes her eyes dark?"
Ethan stepped forward, emboldened by Arthur's skepticism. "My mother works at the compounding pharmacy in town," the boy explained, his voice steady. "She saw this lady buying massive quantities of strong atropine drops—drops that dilate the pupils so badly they cause temporary blindness and extreme light sensitivity. She makes her own mixtures at home so there are no official medical records."
Arthur felt as if the ground were shifting beneath his feet. He looked at Sophie, who was shivering despite the warm midday heat, clutching her oversized sunglasses. For the past year, Clara had insisted on homeschooling Sophie, keeping her in darkened rooms, and managing her "progressive neurological blindness" entirely on her own. Arthur had poured millions into a special trust fund set up for Sophie's lifetime care, a fund that Clara had sole power of attorney over.
"Is this true, Clara?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a dangerous mixture of grief and rage. "Have you been blinding our daughter for money?"
Clara backed away, her eyes darting toward the villa's entrance as she realized her elaborate web of deception was collapsing.
