Previously: When a poor boy knelt to wash my paralyzed feet, my wealthy father tried to stop him—until a shocking physical sensation and an old silver medallion exposed a long-buried family secret.

The Ghost of the Past

The silver medallion dangled between them, catching the last rays of the dying sun. Richard’s hand fell away from Toby’s shoulder as if he had been burned. His eyes darted from the medallion to Toby’s face, searching the young man's features with a mixture of horror and recognition.

"Where did you get that?"

Richard demanded, his powerful voice suddenly reduced to a trembling whisper. Toby stood up slowly, towering over the older man despite his dirty clothes.

"My mother is Sarah,"

Toby said, his voice steady and cold.

"The woman you paid to run away twenty-two years ago. She is alive, and she sent me to find my sister."

Clara felt the ground tilt beneath her. Sarah was the mother her father claimed had died in a tragic fire shortly after her birth. She looked at Richard, waiting for him to laugh, to call the boy crazy. But her father’s silence was deafening. He was trembling, his hands clenching into fists as his carefully constructed world began to crumble.

"This is extortion!"

Richard finally yelled, turning to Clara.

"He’s a liar, Clara! Don't listen to him. We are going inside right now!"

He reached out to grab Clara's arm, but Toby stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body.

"He’s the one who’s been lying to you, Clara,"

Toby shouted over Richard's protests.

"The car accident didn't paralyze you forever. The daily medication he forces you to take—the blue pills—they are nerve blockers! He kept you numb so you would never leave this estate and find out about us!"

Clara stared at her father, her heart hammering against her ribs. The blue pills she took every morning and night. Her father had always insisted they were for her heart and pain. She looked at Richard’s desperate face, seeing the raw guilt written in his eyes. He didn't deny it; he only glared at Toby with murderous intent.
