Previously: When Nicholas returned early from his business trip, he expected a warm welcome. Instead, he found his pregnant wife Natalie on her knees scrubbing the floor while his mother watched with cold indifference.

Unmasking the Monster

Patricia did not flinch. She set her teacup down with a soft click, her expression hard. "Don't raise your voice to me in my own home, Nicholas," she warned. "I am only testing the girl. She comes from nothing, and she expects to inherit everything we have worked for. A few chores won't hurt her."

Nicholas rushed to Natalie's side, helping her up from the wet floor. He wrapped his navy suit jacket around her shivering shoulders.

"Your home? I bought this house, Mother. And Natalie is my wife. She is carrying your grandchild!"

he roared, holding Natalie close as she clung to him, trembling.

But the horror was only beginning. As Natalie leaned against Nicholas, she whispered in his ear, her voice barely audible.

"Nicholas... it’s not just the cleaning. She took my prenatal vitamins. She told me if I complained to you, she would use her lawyers to make sure I never see our baby."

Nicholas felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at his mother, unable to comprehend the cruelty. He walked over to Patricia's designer handbag sitting on the side table. Ignoring her sharp protests, he dumped its contents onto the table. Out spilled three bottles of prescription prenatal vitamins, along with Natalie’s missing wedding ring, which Patricia had claimed was "lost" days ago.

"You stole her medication?" Nicholas whispered, the fury in his voice turning into a cold, terrifying calm. "You tried to endanger my wife and my unborn child?"

Patricia sneered, finally losing her aristocratic composure. "She is a gold-digger, Nicholas! I did what I had to do to protect our family legacy. She doesn't deserve you, and she certainly doesn't deserve a dime of our fortune!"
