A Mother’s Worst Nightmare

The sterile, fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor hummed with a cold, uncaring energy. Stephanie clutched her swollen abdomen, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps as the early labor pains began to ripple through her body. She had rushed to the hospital alone, her husband David claiming he was stuck at an urgent business meeting. The loneliness was heavy, but it was nothing compared to the sudden wave of dread that washed over her as the elevator doors slid open at the end of the hall.

Stepping out of the elevator was Melissa, David’s sister. She was wearing a striking teal dress, but her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. Her high heels clicked sharply against the linoleum, a menacing rhythm that made Stephanie’s heart race. Before Stephanie could even call out for help, Melissa was upon her, shouting accusations that made no sense.

“You don’t deserve this!” Melissa screamed, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. “You stole my life, and you think you can just have it all?”

Terrified for her unborn child, Stephanie stumbled backward, losing her footing and collapsing heavily onto her knees. She sobbed, shielding her belly with her arms. But Melissa wasn't finished. She pulled her foot back, aiming a vicious kick directly at Stephanie's stomach.

Suddenly, a white coat blurred into view. Dr. Clark, a senior obstetrician who had heard the commotion, rushed forward with incredible speed. He shoved Melissa away with a powerful push, standing tall as a shield.

“Stop it! Get away from her!”
he roared, his voice booming through the corridor.

Stephanie collapsed entirely onto the cold floor, crying out in agony.

“Help! The baby!”
she screamed, clutching her stomach. Dr. Clark immediately knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her to protect her.
“I’ve got you, you’re safe now,”
he whispered, his calm voice a lifeline in the middle of the chaos.
