Hospital security quickly swarmed the hallway, pinning a screaming Melissa to the floor as Dr. Clark and the nursing staff rushed Stephanie into an emergency delivery room. Stephanie was shaking violently, the physical pain of her contractions eclipsed by the sheer terror of what had just happened. Why would her sister-in-law try to hurt her baby? As Dr. Clark prepped her for delivery, Stephanie’s phone buzzed repeatedly on the bedside table. It was a series of frantic text messages from David. With trembling hands, she picked up the phone, expecting words of love and concern from her husband. Instead, she read a message that made her blood run cold. It was clearly meant for Melissa, but in his panic, David had sent it to Stephanie by mistake.

“Is it done?” the message read. “Did you make sure she lost the baby? The trust fund is ours if that child is never born. Don't screw this up.”

Tears of betrayal streamed down Stephanie's face. Her husband and his sister had conspired to end her pregnancy for money. Dr. Clark saw her pale face and gently took the phone from her hand. As he read the screen, his jaw tightened, and a look of profound anger washed over his face.

he said softly.

“I will protect you and this child. They won't touch you again.”

Moments later, the door to the delivery room slammed open. David burst in, breathing heavily. He didn't look at Stephanie; instead, he demanded to know why his sister had been arrested. When Dr. Clark confronted him with the text message, David’s face grew pale, but he quickly recovered. He sneered, stepping closer to Stephanie’s bed.

“You think you can ruin me?”

David whispered maliciously.

“If you don't sign over full custody of that baby right now, my lawyers will destroy you. You'll end up with nothing.”
