The opulent dining room of Le Ciel Étoilé, Paris, shimmered under the warm glow of chandeliers and flickering candlelight. Polished mahogany tables reflected the amber light, each set with gleaming crystal and fine silver. Outside, rain lashed against the grand arched windows, a stark contrast to the hushed murmur of the elite diners within. Amidst this sophisticated ambiance, a storm was brewing, centered around Professor Julian Vance, a man whose silver temples and tailored suit couldn't mask the disdain in his sharp features, and Ruth Miller, a young artist whose resilience shone through her paint-splattered denim jacket and defiant gaze.

The Professor's Fury

Julian loomed over Ruth, his posture aggressive, his voice dripping with venom. He had discovered Ruth, a talented but unpolished artist he’d once mentored, working as a waitress in this very establishment. His ego, wounded by her burgeoning talent and independent spirit, had finally snapped. With a vicious roar, he lifted the framed oil painting Ruth had brought, her latest masterpiece, and brought his leather-soled shoe down upon it. The sickening crack of splintering wood and the violent rip of canvas echoed in the sudden silence. "A worthless guttersnipe belongs in the gutter, Ruth, not in high society," he spat, his words laced with cruel satisfaction. Ruth stood rigid, her breath hitched, tears welling but not falling, her pupils dilated in shock.

Julian’s manicured hands then tore the remaining canvas into ragged strips, tossing them onto the immaculate white tablecloth. Fragments landed in a crystal wine glass, toppling it and sending a cascade of deep red Merlot across the linen. "Consider this a lesson in reality—your art is utterly worthless," he sneered, a mocking smile playing on his lips. Ruth remained silent, her jaw clenched, a vein pulsing in her neck, her suppressed fury palpable.

Just as the tension reached its peak, the ornate brass doors of the salon swung open. Heads turned. Madame Laurent, the esteemed Chief Curator of the Louvre, entered, an elegant figure in a navy silk trench coat, accompanied by Henri Dupont, the Global Director of Sotheby's, carrying a locked crimson leather portfolio. They moved with urgent purpose, striding past the astonished patrons directly towards Ruth. "Mademoiselle Ruth! Thank God we found you before the private sale closed!" Madame Laurent exclaimed, her voice breathless. Julian Vance froze, his cruel smirk replaced by an expression of paralyzed bewilderment, his face draining to a ghastly white.
