The Gala's Shattered Masterpiece

The air in the gilded European ballroom shimmered, thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the resonant hum of chamber strings. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, prismatic glow across the mirror-polished Carrara marble, reflecting the dazzling array of high-society guests. Velvet ropes swayed gently, marking the boundary between the oblivious revelry and the art. It was here, amidst this opulence, that Hannah’s world would spectacularly collide with Professor Brock Henderson’s disdain.

Hannah, a young painter barely out of her teens, stood near her easel. Her vintage emerald velvet gown, flecked with the faint marks of her craft, felt out of place yet defiant. Her auburn hair was a messy bun, and her eyes, though tear-glistening, held a spark of fierce pride. Her masterpiece, an oil portrait pulsing with raw emotion, was the centerpiece of her ambition.

Suddenly, Professor Henderson, a man whose silver hair and aristocratic features were as sharp as his sneer, moved through the crowd. His bespoke charcoal tuxedo exuded an air of cold authority. He stopped before Hannah’s painting, his hawk nose practically quivering with disgust. The patrons nearest them fell silent, sensing the brewing storm.

“Garbage like this does not belong in my academy, you pathetic amateur!”

With a violent heave, Henderson seized the top edge of the canvas. His arms jerked apart with brutal force. The sharp crack of snapping pine stretcher bars echoed through the hall, followed by the agonizing screech of heavy linen canvas tearing in two. Hannah stood paralyzed, her chin quivering, tears welling as her chest heaved. She remained silent, her mouth clamped shut, a picture of horrified disbelief.

Henderson carelessly flung the shredded pieces onto the marble floor. The percussive slap seemed to mock the delicate beauty of the hall. He then ground his polished oxford shoe heel into the painted face of the portrait, a sadistic finality in his actions.

“You are officially expelled, Hannah—your worthless little career dies tonight.”

Hannah’s jaw clenched, her fists balling at her sides. A single tear, hot and defiant, sliced through the dried cadmium red paint on her cheek. Her career, her dreams, lay in tatters at her feet, crushed by the very man who was supposed to guide her.
