The Humiliation

The air in the exclusive Parisian restaurant hung thick with the scent of expensive perfume and simmering resentment. Candlelight danced across polished mahogany, reflecting in the Baccarat crystal goblets that stood like silent sentinels on the tables. Outside, rain streaked the grand, arched windows, muffling the city's pulse. Inside, however, the only sound that mattered was the venom dripping from Professor Carter Ross’s lips.

He loomed over me, his slicked-back silver hair catching the light, his charcoal suit impeccable. His cold blue eyes, magnified by tortoiseshell glasses, bored into me. In his hand, he held my latest painting – a portrait of a weeping saint, its luminous oils seeming to glow near the flickering flame of a nearby candle. Around us, the hushed murmurs of high society’s elite ceased, replaced by the sharp focus of curious, smirking onlookers.

“You have zero talent, Grace—you’re a gutter beggar pretending to be an artist.”

My own hands clenched, fingernails digging into the worn fabric of my oversized beige sweater. My breath hitched, a silent sob building in my chest. My mouth remained shut, my chin trembling violently. Tears welled, hot and stinging, along my lower eyelids, blurring the opulent scene into a watery haze. I was paralyzed, trapped in his cruel spotlight.

Then, with a swift, brutal motion, he seized the stretched linen canvas. The low angle of the shot emphasized his imposing figure as he ripped it down the middle. The sound was a sickening, explosive CRUNCH, a violent tearing of fabric that echoed the shattering of my spirit. Airborne threads and dry oil paint chips scattered like debris. His downward swing continued, striking a heavy crystal goblet, sending shards and crimson wine exploding across the polished parquet floor.

“Consider this worthless garbage expelled from my academy!”

His laughter was sadistic, a chilling sound that cut through the stunned silence. My eyes widened, locked in a state of horrified disbelief. My breath hitched audibly, a single, heavy tear escaping to trace a path down my flushed cheek. The world seemed to tilt, the elegant restaurant dissolving into a nightmare.
