The Final Flight of Justice

Lorenzo's words hung in the air like a storm cloud. Claire's heart pounded as she watched him tap his phone, his jaw tight.

"She had help," he muttered. "Her lawyer must have bribed a guard."

"What does that mean?" Claire asked, her voice shaking. "Is she coming after us?"

Lorenzo's eyes flicked to Daisy, who was happily playing with her Braille music box, oblivious to the danger. "She's not stupid enough to come back on this plane," he said. "But she's desperate. And desperate people do dangerous things."

He made a call, his voice low and urgent. Claire caught fragments: "Federal warrant… track her phone… no, don't wait."

Daisy looked up, her head tilted. "Mommy, is the mean lady gone?"

Claire knelt beside her, forcing a calm smile. "Yes, baby. She's gone."

"Good," Daisy said, then returned to her music box, humming a soft tune.

The flight took off, the cabin tilting gently as the A380 climbed into the cool blue twilight. But Claire couldn't relax. She kept glancing at Lorenzo, who stared at his phone like it held the answer to everything.

An hour into the flight, his phone buzzed. He read the message, and a slow, satisfied smile spread across his face.

"They got her," he said. "She was trying to board a private jet to Mexico. The authorities arrested her at the hangar."

Claire let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "She's really done?"

"She's really done," Lorenzo confirmed. "Her lawyer is being investigated too. She's looking at decades in prison."

Claire sank into the plush seat, the tension draining from her shoulders. "I can't believe this is over."

But Daisy, who had been listening, piped up. "Is the lady going to be okay?"

Claire and Lorenzo exchanged a glance. "She made bad choices," Claire said gently. "And now she has to face them."

Daisy nodded solemnly. "I hope she learns to be nice."

Lorenzo smiled, a genuine, warm smile that softened his weathered features. "You're a special girl, Daisy," he said. "You have a good heart."

Daisy beamed. "Thank you for being nice to me."

The rest of the flight passed in a blur of small kindnesses — Lorenzo teaching Daisy how to identify the different textures of the suite, the flight attendant bringing her a tiny model of the A380, and Claire finally allowing herself to cry, silent tears of relief.

As they landed in Paris, Lorenzo turned to Claire. "I have a proposition," he said. "I know this is forward, but I've been alone for five years. And meeting you and Daisy… it's the first time I've felt hope since Elena died."

Claire's breath caught. "Lorenzo, I—"

"I'm not asking for anything," he said quickly. "I just want to know if I can see you again. Take you both to dinner. Show Daisy the city."

Claire looked at Daisy, who was already reaching for Lorenzo's hand. The little girl had never been this comfortable with anyone outside their small family.

"I'd like that," Claire said, and for the first time in years, her smile was unguarded.

They walked down the jet bridge together, Daisy skipping between them, her cane tapping a cheerful rhythm. And as they stepped into the Paris sunlight, Claire realized that the woman who had tried to crush them had, in the end, given them the greatest gift of all: each other.

Some people think power is about taking. But Lorenzo had shown her that true power is about giving — and that even in the darkest moments, kindness can turn the world around.
