Previously: Standing barefoot in the pouring rain, Clara watched her mother-in-law throw her wedding dress into the mud. But the truth behind the ruined gown changed everything.

A Ghost in the Lace

Evelyn finally took a step forward, the wet grass squelching beneath her boots. Slowly, she turned the silver frame around, forcing Clara to look at the photograph. Through the rain-speckled glass, Clara saw a beautiful young brunette woman. She was smiling radiantly, wearing the exact same lace wedding dress that now lay soiled in the mud.

“This is Sarah,” Evelyn said, her voice cracking with emotion. “Julian’s first fiancée. The one he told you moved to Europe and broke his heart.”

Clara felt the breath leave her lungs. Julian had mentioned Sarah only once, claiming it was a painful chapter of his past that he had fully closed. He had told Clara that her wedding gown was a unique creation, designed specifically for her. He had even taken her to a boutique where a designer seemed to take her measurements, but now Clara realized it had all been a carefully orchestrated lie. Every detail of her wedding had been pre-planned years ago for another woman.

“Sarah didn't move away, Clara,” Evelyn continued, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. “She called off the wedding when she realized Julian was obsessed with controlling her. He kept this dress in storage, waiting for someone who looked enough like her to fill the mold. He didn't design this for you. He had it altered. He is trying to marry a ghost, and he’s using you to do it.”

Clara turned her head toward the porch, hoping, praying that Julian would scream, deny it, or call his mother a liar. But Julian remained frozen. The guilt etched into his features was all the confirmation Clara needed. He had met Clara right after Sarah left, quickly steering her toward the same hairstyle, the same style of clothing, and ultimately, the same wedding. The broken frames on the lawn were photos of Julian and Sarah that Evelyn had dragged out of his secret storage locker in the basement.

The realization hit Clara like a physical blow. The man she loved didn't love her for who she was; he loved her for who she replaced.
