The Coldest Reception

The sterile, fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Community Hospital hummed with a clinical indifference that matched the mood in the reception lobby. Six-year-old Lily, dressed in her favorite yellow floral dress, clutched her stomach, her small body trembling with agony. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks, splashing onto the polished linoleum floor. Her blonde pigtails shook as she looked up at the high wooden reception desk.

"Ma'am, my tummy hurts a lot!" Lily sobbed, her voice cracking under the weight of excruciating pain.

Behind the desk sat Brenda, a middle-aged receptionist with auburn hair pulled back into a tight, severe bun. Wearing a drab grey cardigan, she didn't even bother to look up from her computer screen. She tapped lazily on her keyboard, her expression one of utter annoyance. To her, this was just another dramatic patient trying to cut the line on a busy Tuesday afternoon.

"You wait your turn here, just like everyone else," Brenda said, her voice sharp, dismissive, and entirely devoid of empathy.

Before Lily could reply, heavy, frantic footsteps echoed down the hallway. Mark, her father, came running into the lobby. His brown leather jacket was unzipped, his chest heaving as he rushed to his daughter's side. He had just parked the car after a terrifying drive where Lily had screamed in pain the entire way. Seeing his daughter crying at the desk while the receptionist ignored her sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through his veins.

Mark dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around Lily to comfort her. He stared up at Brenda, his eyes blazing with a mixture of shock, anger, and desperation. "My daughter is in severe pain!" Mark demanded, his voice echoing in the quiet lobby. "She needs to see a doctor immediately. I think her appendix is about to burst!" Brenda slowly shifted her gaze to Mark, unimpressed by his panic, and sighed heavily.
