Previously: When David's 11-year-old daughter collapsed with severe abdominal pain, a heartless receptionist refused to help them. She had no idea that David held the key to her entire future.

The Defiance of Duty

David felt a surge of adrenaline as he held his sobbing daughter. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin; she was running a fever, and her abdomen was rigid to the touch. As a father, he was terrified; as a man of science, he knew every second counted.

"My daughter is experiencing an acute medical emergency,"

David said, forcing his voice to remain steady despite the rage bubbling inside him. "She needs to be triaged immediately. Please call a nurse."

Brenda crossed her arms, leaning back in her ergonomic chair. She looked at David's casual attire beneath his coat and assumed he was just another demanding parent trying to skip the line.

"Sir, I don't care who you think you are,"

Brenda sneered, her voice dripping with condescension. "Everyone in this waiting room has an emergency. You will take a clipboard, you will sit down, and you will wait until your name is called. If you raise your voice at me again, I will have security escort you out of this building."

David stared at her, shocked by the sheer lack of humanity. He was about to demand to see her supervisor when a familiar voice broke the tension. Dr. Harrison, the senior attending surgeon, walked out of the double doors leading to the emergency wing, holding a chart. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the man in the charcoal coat.

"Dr. Vance?"

Dr. Harrison gasped, his eyes wide with astonishment. He quickly stepped forward, ignoring Brenda entirely. "Dr. Vance, we weren't expecting you until this afternoon! Is everything alright?"

Brenda's smug expression instantly froze. She looked between the prestigious senior surgeon and the man she had just threatened to throw out, a sudden, cold dread washing over her.
