David could barely sleep that night. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lily’s brave smile and heard her desperate lie. The next morning, he arrived at his restaurant early, but he didn't open the doors to the public. Instead, he spent hours packing a massive wooden crate with fresh produce, milk, bread, and several hearty, pre-cooked meals. He carried the heavy box down the damp alleyway and knocked firmly on the rusted metal door.

The door creaked open, and the pale woman from the night before looked out, her eyes wide with fear. She instinctively pulled Lily and her other children behind her. "Can I help you?" she asked, her voice defensive and trembling.

"My name is David," he said gently, setting the heavy crate down. "I saw your daughter last night. I brought some food for your family."

On the shelf sat a framed, faded photograph. David’s breath caught in his throat, and his hands began to shake violently. In the picture, a smiling man in a paramedic uniform stood next to Sarah. David recognized that face instantly. It was Thomas, the brave first responder who had pulled David’s dying daughter from a burning car wreck five years ago, desperately performing CPR until the ambulance arrived. Thomas had died himself just a year later in the line of duty.
