I Returned From Deployment to Find My Wife in Another Man's Arms
Previously: Nicholas returned home early from a long deployment, expecting a joyful reunion with his wife, Elizabeth. Instead, he walked in on a devastating scene that shattered his heart.
The Bitter Confrontation
The silence that followed her plea was deafening. I looked at William, the man who had stood beside me as my best man, the brother I had chosen. He stared at the carpet, his hands trembling. I felt a cold, sickening rage bubbling up from the depths of my stomach, replacing the initial shock of betrayal.
"Get out," I whispered, my voice dangerously low.
William looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of guilt and pity. "Nic, please, it's not what it looks like. Let us explainβ"
"I said, get the hell out of my house!" I roared, the pain tearing through my throat.
Without another word, William grabbed his jacket and hurried past me, keeping his head down. The front door clicked shut, leaving me alone with the woman I had spent every night dreaming about. Elizabeth was weeping openly now, her hands clutching her stomach as she took a step toward me. I flinched away, refusing to let her touch me.
That was when my eyes drifted to the coffee table. Next to a half-empty mug lay a small white plastic stick. It was a pregnancy test. Two pink lines stared back at me with mocking clarity. My heart stopped. I had been deployed for nine months. There was no mathematical possibility that the child she was carrying was mine.
"Whose is it?" I asked, my voice cracking under the weight of a shattered life. "Is it his, Elizabeth?"
She shook her head violently, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "No, Nicholas! No! I swear to you, I have never been unfaithful to you! Please, you have to believe me!"
I scoffed, gesturing wildly at the test and the couch. "Then explain this! Explain why my best friend was holding you like a lover in our home!"
Elizabeth wiped her tears and ran to her desk, pulling out a thick manila envelope. "Because I couldn't face it alone," she whispered, holding it out to me. "I didn't want you to lose focus over there. I didn't want you to get hurt because of me."
