He Returned Early to Find His Daughter Kneeling on the Floor in Terror
Previously: When John walked into his luxury home early, he expected a quiet evening. Instead, he found his daughter weeping on the floor while his wife stood by with a cold smile.
The Mask Slips Away
Sarah's serene expression faltered for a fraction of a second before she quickly recovered, letting out a soft, dismissive laugh. She set her wine glass down on the marble console table and took a step toward John, her arms open in a gesture of false comfort.
"John, sweetie, don't be so dramatic," Sarah cooed, casting a brief, warning glare at Emma. "The girl is just having one of her emotional tantrums. She was caught stealing from my jewelry box, and I was simply explaining the consequences."
Emma let out a choked cry, shaking her head vigorously as she clutched her father's slacks. "That's not true, Dad! I didn't steal anything! She locked me out of my room... she took Mom's heirloom ring and said she was going to sell it. She told me if I complained, she'd make sure you sent me away!"
The revelation hit John like a physical blow. The heirloom ring had belonged to his late wife, a precious memory meant for Emma's future. John looked from his distraught daughter to his second wife. Sarah's eyes had turned predatory, the sweet stepmother facade completely vanishing.
"Are you going to believe a hysterical teenager over your own wife, John?" Sarah sneered, her voice losing all its warmth. "I have kept this house running while you've been away. She is a liar."
But John was no fool. For months, he had noticed Emma growing quieter, her grades slipping, and her vibrant spirit fading. He had also noticed strange discrepancies in the household accounts. He had hoped he was overthinking things, but the scene before him was undeniable proof of a deeper malice.
"I don't need to choose who to believe, Sarah," John said quietly, his grip tightening around his daughter's hand. "Because the truth is already on its way."
