Tyler didn't waste another moment arguing. He carried Mason out of the house and straight to his truck, turning the heater on high. He wrapped the boy in his own heavy military jacket, watching as the color slowly returned to Mason's cheeks. Tyler knew he couldn't leave his son in that house for another second.

The legal battle that followed was fierce. Sarah and David tried to claim that Tyler was unstable after his deployment, attempting to keep custody to preserve the financial benefits that came with Mason. The medical reports from the night of his return proved severe neglect, and neighbors testified that Mason was often left unsupervised while Sarah and David went out.

Months later, a gentle snow began to fall outside a new, modest apartment. Inside, the rooms were filled with warmth and laughter. Tyler sat on the carpet, helping Mason build a massive wooden train track. The black steel chair and the cold backyard were nothing but a distant memory.

Mason looked up at his father, his eyes bright and full of trust.

"Are we going to stay here forever, Dad?" he asked.
