Ignoring Victoria’s stunned silence, I charged past him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I reached for the ridiculously ostentatious five-carat platinum diamond engagement ring that Victoria had forced upon me. With a guttural cry of defiance, I wrenched it from my trembling finger and hurled it with all my might into the grinding brass gears. A shower of sparks erupted, followed by a sickening crunch as the symbol of our ill-fated union was crushed into glittering dust. “I would rather rot in poverty than spend one second with a pathetic fraud!” I declared, my voice ringing with venomous conviction.
