Previously: A cruel orphanage director shoves a crippled girl away from wealthy visitors—until the wife kneels, sees the swan birthmark, and whispers, 'Hold still.' Five years of searching ended in a parlor.

The Truth Behind the Birthmark

The private jet cut through the clouds, leaving a silver trail across the blue sky. Clara sat between her parents, her legs stretched out on the leather seat, her steel brace propped on a cushion. She had never been on a plane before. She had never been anywhere, really, except the orphanage and the small, gray courtyard behind it.

"Are you scared?" she asked, looking up at her mother.

The Rich Couple's Shocking Discovery About the Orphan Girl's Birthmark

Clara Vance smiled. "A little. But I'm more curious than scared."

"Me too," Clara said. She touched the birthmark on her neck. "Is it really a swan?"

"It's actually a falcon," her father said. "The Vance family crest. It's been passed down for generations."

Clara frowned. "But I thought it was a swan."

"It's a falcon," her mother said gently. "And it's beautiful. It's the mark of our family."

Clara touched it again, tracing the curve with her finger. She had spent so many years hiding it, ashamed of it. Now she was proud of it.

The hospital was white and sterile, with long corridors and the faint smell of antiseptic. A nurse led them to a private room at the end of the hall, and Clara Vance's heart pounded in her chest.

"Are you ready?" Marcus asked.

She nodded, and he pushed open the door.

An old woman lay in the bed, her hair thin and white, her face lined with age. She looked up as they entered, and her eyes widened.

"Clara," she breathed. "You came."

Clara Vance walked to the bedside, her hands trembling. "Mother. Why?"

The old woman closed her eyes. "Because I was afraid," she said. "Afraid that the child would be like her father. Afraid that she would bring shame to the family."

"Her father?" Marcus asked. "You mean..."

"The man who—" The old woman's voice cracked. "The man who hurt you, Clara. The man who left you with a child. I couldn't bear it. I thought if I took the baby away, you could start fresh."

Clara Vance stared at her mother, tears streaming down her face. "You took my daughter from me. You made me think she was dead."

"I was trying to protect you," the old woman said. "I was trying to protect us all."

"But you hurt us," Marcus said. "You hurt all of us."

The old woman looked at Clara, the little girl, who was standing by the door, clutching her mother's hand. "She has the mark," the old woman whispered. "The falcon. The mark of the Vance family."

"Yes," Clara Vance said. "She's a Vance. She's my daughter."

The old woman was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Clara Vance looked at her mother, and she felt a strange mix of anger and pity. "I forgive you," she said. "But I can't forget. And you will never see her again."

The old woman nodded, tears sliding down her cheeks. "I understand."

Clara Vance turned and walked out of the room, her hand wrapped tightly around her daughter's.

"Where are we going now?" Clara asked.

"Home," her mother said. "We're going home."

And as they walked out of the hospital, into the warm sunlight, Clara felt something she had never felt before. She felt free.
