The Night of the Serpent's Kiss

The penthouse banquet hall was a monument to excess. Marble floors gleamed under the warm, amber light of crystal chandeliers, reflecting a scene of opulent indulgence. Outside, a storm raged, violet lightning cracking across the midnight sky, illuminating the rain-lashed city below. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the murmur of elite society. Vintage champagne, spilled carelessly on the polished floor, added a sticky sweetness to the air. Dr. Carter Ross, a man sculpted by privilege, stood with an aristocratic sneer, his midnight velvet tuxedo impeccable save for the faintest smudge of something dark near his polished shoe. He gestured with a crystal glass, a mocking smile playing on his lips as he addressed Dr. Tommy Vance. Tommy, a stark contrast in his rugged tweed jacket and mud-caked leather boots, stood silently, the dried red clay on the pristine marble a testament to his different world.

Carter’s voice dripped with condescension. “Did security mistake a manure shoveler for a guest, or did your tractor break down outside our gala?” he drawled, his gaze flicking pointedly at the mud clinging to Tommy’s boots. A ripple of snobbish amusement went through the nearby guests. Tommy remained impassive, his jaw set, eyes cold. Suddenly, a strangled gasp cut through the polite chatter. Nineteen-year-old Julian Sterling, Carter’s son, slumped in a gilded chair nearby, his aristocratic features contorted in sudden, terrifying distress. He thrashed violently, choking, his lips turning a horrifying shade of cyanotic blue as foamy secretions bubbled forth. An ice bucket crashed to the floor with a deafening clang. Carter stumbled forward, his composure shattering. “Massive anaphylactic shock!” he shrieked, fumbling with an epinephrine autoinjector. “Clear the table, he’s dying on my watch!” Tommy, however, was already moving. His eyes narrowed, a razor-sharp diagnostic acuity replacing the stoic silence. He knelt beside Julian, peeling back a slack eyelid. Pinpoint pupils, unresponsive. Tell-tale facial spasms. This was no allergy.
