Previously: When arrogant billionaire Alex dared a humble waitress to dance for fifty thousand dollars, he expected a cheap laugh. Instead, her transformation exposed a devastating family secret.

The Mask Slips

The silence in the golden ballroom was suffocating. Alex stared at Chloe, his eyes wide with a terror he couldn't hide. Two years ago, they had been engaged, and she had been the heiress to the very hotel they stood in. But after her father’s sudden passing, Alex and his family had manipulated the estate, embezzling millions and leaving Chloe with nothing. He had abandoned her, believing she would fade into poverty.

"Alex, what is the meaning of this?" Sarah demanded, her voice sharp with sudden jealousy. "Who is this woman, and why are you looking at her like you've seen a ghost?"

Alex didn't answer his fiancée. Instead, he grabbed Chloe roughly by the arm and pulled her away from the staring crowd, dragging her into the dimly lit private corridor behind the ballroom.

"What are you doing here, Chloe?" he hissed, his voice trembling with rage. "You're a waitress. You're supposed to be cleaning up garbage, not playing dress-up in my ballroom!"

Chloe calmly pulled her arm from his grip, her eyes cold and steady.

"It was my father's ballroom first, Alex," she replied. "And you dared me to dance. I simply accepted the challenge."

Panicking, Alex pulled out his sleek leather checkbook. His hands shook as he scribbled a figure.

"I'll write you a check for one hundred thousand dollars right now," he whispered desperately. "Take it and leave the city. If you try to ruin my engagement night, I will have security throw you out and call the police for trespassing."

Chloe looked down at the paper, a cold smile playing on her lips. She knew Alex was terrified. He wasn't worried about his engagement; he was worried about the dark financial secrets that kept his family afloat.

"You think you can buy your way out of everything," Chloe whispered. "But some things aren't for sale."

Chloe whispered. "But some things aren't for sale."
