The Reunion

The air in the VIP banquet wing was thick with the cloying scent of expensive perfume and the low hum of privileged conversation. Outside, rain lashed against the panoramic windows, mirroring the storm brewing within. I, Grace Vance, stood just inside the service entrance, my charcoal trench coat damp, a stark contrast to the glittering opulence surrounding me. Across the polished floor, Courtney Sterling, my childhood acquaintance and now a dazzling heiress, swirled champagne in a crystal flute. Her emerald silk dress, daringly backless, and the diamond choker around her neck screamed wealth and status. Her sculpted cheekbones were sharp, her expression one of arrogant amusement.

She finally noticed me, her eyes, accustomed to adoration, narrowing with disdain. She approached, her laughter like the tinkling of breaking glass. "Grace, darling, is that you?" she drawled, her voice dripping with mock concern. "I almost didn't recognize you. Did you take a rusted yellow cab to our ten-year reunion? Dishwashers typically enter through the alley, you know." Her gaze swept over my sensible attire, lingering on the worn fabric of my umbrella. A silent, almost imperceptible smile played on my lips as I met her mocking stare. My steel-grey eyes held a calm that belied the storm of memories her words stirred.

She continued her verbal assault, sidling past sizzling duck pans, the heat from the kitchen a stark contrast to the chill she projected. She tapped a manicured finger, adorned with a blinding diamond ring, on the stainless-steel counter, stopping just inches from my face. "Some things never change, do they?" she sneered, her voice laced with venomous condescension. "Once a pathetic scholarship charity case, always a penniless nobody." As she spoke, a faint, almost inaudible squawk emanated from beneath my dark hair – an encrypted message from my earpiece, a silent signal from a world she couldn't comprehend. My chin remained level, my expression a mask of polite indifference, though a flicker of amusement danced in my eyes.
