Looking into the young boy's eyes, Richard felt a jolt of pure shock shoot through his chest. Those green, soulful eyes, framed by a thick dusting of freckles, were a mirror image of his estranged daughter, Emily. His heart hammered against his ribs as he tried to keep his voice steady.

"What is your mother's name, son?"

Richard asked, his voice thick with unshed tears.

Toby hesitated, looking at the kind but emotional face of the wealthy stranger. Sensing no harm, he whispered,

"Her name is Emily. Emily Vance."

The name hit Richard like a physical blow. Emily had taken her late husband's surname when she married against Richard's wishes. These were his grandchildren, starving on the streets while he sat on a fortune.

"Where is your mother now, Toby?"

Richard asked, his hands trembling as he held the boy's shoulders.

Toby’s lower lip quivered as he pointed out the window toward the city hospital.

"She's very sick in the hospital. The doctors said she needs expensive medicine, and we had to leave our apartment because we couldn't pay the rent."

When they arrived at the crowded ward, Toby led Richard to a small, curtained bed. There lay Emily, pale and desperately weak, but still possessing the beautiful spirit Richard remembered. Thomas smiled coldly as Richard entered.

"Well, well, Richard. You're too late,"

Thomas sneered, holding up a signed legal document.

"Emily signed her late husband's land patent over to me in exchange for emergency medical funding. If you interfere, I will cancel the funding tonight, and she will be discharged."
