William immediately paid Albert for the milk, the doll, and several bags of warm food from the deli counter. Albert breathed a sigh of relief, murmuring a quiet thank you to the generous stranger. Lily could hardly believe her eyes as William handed her the bags, but instead of running away, she stood there, looking up at him with immense gratitude.

"Where are your parents, little one?" William asked gently as they stepped out into the freezing night. Lily hesitated, her lower lip trembling. She looked down at her worn sneakers before whispering that her mother had passed away three months ago, and their father had abandoned them shortly after. They were hiding in an abandoned building down the street to avoid being separated by social services.

William's heart sank. He couldn't leave a ten-year-old girl and her baby brother to freeze. "Take me to your brother," he said firmly. Lily nodded and led him through the dark, icy streets to a derelict apartment complex. Inside a drafty, unheated room, wrapped in thin, dirty blankets, was baby Leo. He was shivering, his cries weak and exhausted.

William immediately rushed to the baby, wrapping him in his own warm wool trench coat. As he did, a small, faded photograph fell from Lily's pocket. William picked it up, intending to hand it back, but stopped dead in his tracks. The woman in the photo, smiling brightly next to a young Lily, was someone he recognized instantly. It was Sarah, his college sweetheart whom he had lost touch with over a decade ago after an unresolved misunderstanding.

"This is your mother?"

William asked, his voice barely a whisper, his hands trembling as he stared at the face of the only woman he had ever truly loved.
