The echoes of Julian’s shout faded, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the grand foyer. Martha began to weep softly, her shoulders shaking under the weight of the two sleeping babies. Julian gently helped his mother to her feet, carefully unbuckling the fabric carrier to take his children into his own arms. He handed the sleeping twins to Martha, whispering for her to take them to the nursery.

Once his mother was out of earshot, Julian turned his fury back to Vanessa. "What is wrong with you?" he hissed, his voice trembling. "My mother is sixty-six years old. She is a guest in our home, not your servant! We have a hired cleaning service for this!"

Vanessa let out a mocking laugh, walking down the stairs with slow, deliberate steps until she was standing eye-to-eye with him.

"A guest?" she sneered. "This is my house, Julian. Paid for by my family's trust. Your mother is living here rent-free, and she needs to earn her keep. If she doesn't like it, she can go back to her rotting apartment."

Julian felt a chill run down his spine. He had always known Vanessa came from extreme wealth, but he believed she loved him for who he was. Now, the mask had completely slipped. She explained, with chilling calmness, that she had bought out the mortgage on Martha’s small cottage through a shell company. She had threatened to evict the elderly woman unless she agreed to work as their live-in, unpaid maid and nanny, keeping the arrangement a secret from Julian.

"If you tell him, I'll make sure he loses his job at my father's firm, and I'll take the kids so far away you'll never see them again,"

Vanessa had told Martha. Julian listened in absolute horror as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. His wife wasn't just spoiled; she was a monster who enjoyed exerting absolute control over his family.
