The Archive and the Letter
By the time Margaret arrived, the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the living room. Richard had not moved from the sofa, Lily asleep in his arms. Margaret, a tall woman with silver hair and sharp eyes, took one look at the scene and knew something was deeply wrong.
"Richard," she said softly, sitting beside him. "What happened?"

He showed her the key. "Eleanor's archive. Victoria was trying to get this from Lily."
Margaret's face went pale. "She knew about it?"
"She knew enough," Richard said. "She was willing to hurt a child to get it."
They went down to the basement together, leaving Lily with the family doctor, who had arrived and was checking her hands. The door to the archive was old oak, with a brass lock that matched the key. Richard turned it, and the door swung open with a groan.
Inside, the room was pristine. Shelves lined the walls, filled with boxes and journals. In the center sat a small desk with a single letter on it, addressed to Richard in Eleanor's handwriting. Richard's hands shook as he opened it.
"My dearest Richard," the letter began. "If you are reading this, something has happened to me. I need you to know the truth about Victoria."
Richard read on, his eyes widening. Eleanor had discovered that Victoria was not the kind, loving woman she pretended to be. She had been siphoning money from Richard's accounts, and worse, she had been slowly poisoning Eleanor, hoping to take her place. Eleanor had hidden the evidence in this room, but she had been too weak to confront Victoria before it was too late.
Margaret clutched the letter, tears streaming down her face. "My God. She killed my daughter."
Richard pulled out his phone. "We need to call the police."
But before he could dial, Victoria appeared in the doorway, her face twisted with rage. "You think you can just lock me away and dig through your dead wife's things?" she spat.
Richard stepped in front of Margaret. "You're not supposed to be here."
Victoria laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "This is my house too. I'm your wife, remember?"
"Not for long," Richard said. He held up the letter. "I know what you did to Eleanor."
Victoria's eyes flickered, but she recovered quickly. "That's a lie. She was sick. Everyone knew that."
"She was poisoned," Margaret said, her voice trembling. "And I have the proof."
Victoria took a step back. "You have nothing."
"The doctor will confirm," Richard said. "We have her medical records, and now we have this." He tapped the letter. "You're done, Victoria."
Victoria's composure cracked. "You can't do this to me. I gave up everything for you!"
"You gave up nothing," Richard said. "You took everything."
He called the police, and within minutes, they arrived. Victoria was taken into custody, screaming about how she had been framed, how Richard would regret this. But Richard didn't listen. He held Lily close, and for the first time in months, he felt a sense of peace.
