At the hospital, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Clara was stable but had suffered a fractured hip and deep lacerations. Emily paced the waiting room floor, her hands shaking, while Robert sat silently in a plastic chair, staring at his phone. Every time Emily tried to speak to him, he brushed her off, claiming he was just too traumatized by the accident to talk.

"I told you three weeks ago that those steps needed to be replaced, Robert,"

Emily whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and anger.

Next to the cash lay a printout of a one-way flight ticket to Miami booked in Robert's name, dated for the following week, alongside a lease agreement for a luxury apartment under a name she didn't recognize.
