Previously: When Prince Adrian was forced to marry Princess Genevieve, her head was sealed in a locked wooden barrel—but the horrifying secret hidden inside changed his life forever.

A Kingdom of Secrets

Inside the dark, suffocating confines of the barrel, Princess Genevieve was not a monster, but a victim. A thick leather gag was buckled tightly around her mouth, and her eyes were red and swollen from crying. Pinned to the inside of the wooden door was a scrap of parchment. Adrian pulled it free, his eyes widening as he read the chilling words written in King Edward’s own elegant script: "Keep her silent, or the kingdom burns. She knows what I did to her mother."

With trembling fingers, Adrian reached in and carefully unbuckled the leather gag. Genevieve gasped for air, coughing softly before whispering in a voice hoarse from confinement.

"You must run, Adrian,"
she pleaded, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"My father poisoned my mother to seize absolute power. I saw him do it. He locked me in this cage and forced this marriage to ensure I could never speak the truth. If I reveal his secret, he will execute my younger brother."

Before Adrian could process the horror of her words, the heavy brass doorknob began to turn. The captain of the guard stepped into the room, his hand resting suspiciously on the hilt of his sword. Adrian acted on pure instinct. He quickly closed the barrel’s latch, blocking the captain’s view, and stepped in front of Genevieve. He demanded privacy, claiming his bride was exhausted. The captain sneered but slowly withdrew, leaving them with very little time.

To free Genevieve and save her brother, they needed the key to the iron collar holding the barrel to her shoulders. It was kept in King Edward’s private study, guarded by his most loyal men. Adrian realized that survival meant playing a dangerous game of stealth and treason. He looked at Genevieve, promising her that he would return with the key, even if it cost him his life.
