Previously: A smug city doctor's condescending remarks turn to terror when a governor's son collapses. The rural doctor he disdains must save the boy and expose a deadly truth.

The Reckoning

Sterling, paralyzed by fear and his own ignorance, made a fatal error. He lunged, attempting to shove me away from the boy, a desperate, misguided attempt to assert his authority. But his arrogance couldn’t match my resolve. My left arm shot up, my grip like a vise on his wrist, the sharp crack of bone against bone echoing in the sudden silence. His momentum halted, his eyes wide with disbelief and pain.

“Don't you dare touch him, you reckless butcher!” Sterling gasped, his voice a strangled mixture of outrage and terror.

I held his gaze, my own eyes narrowing with a cold fury. My right hand moved with practiced efficiency, uncapping a glass ampoule of antidote with my teeth. The specialized atropine-pralidoxime mix, a last resort I always carried, a testament to the dangers lurking in the wilderness my city counterparts so readily dismissed.

With Julian’s life hanging by a thread, I leaned over the boy. Sterling watched, trapped in my unyielding grip, his medical reputation crumbling with every passing second. I found the subclavian vein and, with steady, pneumatic force, administered the injection. Julian’s body arched violently, a choked gasp tearing from his lungs as air rushed back in. His lips, moments before a ghastly blue, flushed with life-giving crimson. The color returned to his face, a miracle unfolding before Sterling’s disbelieving eyes.

He stared, his jaw slack, his carefully constructed world imploding. His medical knowledge, his prestigious degrees, all rendered useless by a simple, deadly neurotoxin and a country doctor’s quick thinking. His pale skin was now ashen, his eyes wide with a horror far deeper than the initial panic.

I released Sterling’s wrist. He stumbled back, pressing himself against the greasy counter, his carefully maintained facade utterly destroyed. Julian coughed, his breathing stabilizing. The immediate crisis was over, but the real battle was just beginning. The battle for truth, for recognition, and for the lives that Sterling’s ignorance had so nearly extinguished.
