The Rent Collector's Rage

The air in the old dockside tavern hung thick with the smell of salt, stale beer, and desperation. Rain hammered against the cracked glass skylight, each drop a drumbeat against the groaning timber of the ancient building. Chains, thick and rusted, dangled from the rafters like forgotten nooses, casting long, dancing shadows in the dim, amber glow of the filament bulbs. This was Elena’s sanctuary, a place that had sheltered her for decades, but even its weathered walls couldn’t hide the fear that gripped her now.

She stood cornered, a fragile figure in a worn cardigan, her hands, gnarled with arthritis, shaking as they clutched a steaming tin cup. Her breath hitched, a tiny, terrified sound lost in the storm’s roar. Then, he arrived. Courtney Sterling, her landlord, a man whose tailored suit and slicked hair couldn’t conceal the predatory chill in his hazel eyes. He stepped into her space, his presence suffocating, a stark contrast to her own frail form.

“You’re five days late on rent, old woman, and excuses don’t pay me!”

Elena couldn’t speak. Her lips remained sealed, her watery gray eyes widening in a silent plea as tears welled. Courtney’s voice dripped with mocking disdain. He saw her terror, and it fueled him. The storm outside seemed to intensify as he loomed closer, his sneer deepening. In the background, a hulking figure, David Holloway, the biker from the docks, remained a silent, imposing presence, his scarred eyebrow a dark omen in the gloom.

With a sudden, violent surge of energy, Courtney struck. Not Elena, but the cup in her hand. It flew from her grasp, scalding liquid hissing against the rough timber walls as the metal mug clattered across the wet floor. Elena recoiled, her body trembling, the shock paralyzing her. Courtney’s voice, now laced with vicious cruelty, cut through the air.

“Don’t you dare look away from me!”

He cocked back his fist, veins throbbing, his face contorted with unrestrained fury. The shadows seemed to deepen around him, highlighting the raw menace in his posture. Elena instinctively raised her trembling forearms, a futile gesture of defense against the impending blow. Her weathered cheeks were streaked with tears now, her silent horror palpable.

“Since you can’t pay, I’ll take it out of your hide!”

But just as his fist was about to connect, a blur of motion erupted from the shadows. A massive, leather-clad hand intercepted Courtney’s wrist with a sickening crunch. David Holloway, the silent biker, had moved. He stood like an immovable mountain, his gravelly voice a low, terrifying growl that promised retribution.

“Touch her again, and you leave this dock in pieces.”

Courtney’s arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by wide-eyed shock. His breath hitched as David’s grip tightened, twisting his wrist with brutal force. The sound of popping cartilage echoed in the sudden, stunned silence as Courtney’s knees buckled, his face contorted in agony. The tables had turned, and the bully was now the victim.
