The Scream in the Hallway

Natalie had always known her stepfather, Frank, possessed a volatile temper, but she never imagined his malice would extend to her frail grandmother, Alice. It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon when Natalie returned home early from college, expecting the usual peaceful silence of their suburban home. Instead, as soon as she unlocked the front door, a chilling sound echoed down the bright hallway: a sharp, agonizing cry of pain.

Her heart leaped into her throat. Dropping her backpack, Natalie rushed toward the sound. The cherry wood floors gleamed under the warm hallway lights, but the scene unfolding upon them was pure horror. Frank, dressed in a navy t-shirt, had seventy-two-year-old Alice pinned to the floor. Alice, wearing her favorite yellow cardigan, was whimpering, her face pale with terror.

"Take that, you old hag!" Frank roared, his voice dripping with venom.

He raised a heavy, clenched fist, ready to strike her again, before violently grabbing a handful of her silver hair. Alice groaned in agony, completely helpless under his weight. The sheer cruelty of the sight triggered something primal inside Natalie. She didn't freeze. She didn't call for help. She simply charged.

With a burst of adrenaline, Natalie sprinted down the hallway, her chestnut hair flying behind her. She launched herself into the air, delivering a powerful flying kick directly into Frank’s shoulder, screaming at the top of her lungs:

"Get off her!"

The impact was massive. Frank was caught entirely off guard, grunting as he was knocked off Alice and crashing hard against the drywall. Natalie scrambled to her feet, immediately shielding her trembling grandmother, ready to fight to the death to protect her.
