Previously: When a neighborhood boy stopped Charles and his blind daughter on the street, his shocking words exposed a web of lies that shattered Charles's family forever.

The Falling Mask

The walk back to the house was silent and agonizing. Sophie clung tightly to Charles's arm, her white cane dragging uselessly behind her. When they stepped through the front door, Charles immediately sent Sophie to her room. He then marched into the kitchen, where his wife, Brenda, was sitting at the table, calmly sorting through a stack of mail and medical bills.

"Brenda, we need to talk,"
Charles said, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and rage. He quickly recounted the bizarre and hostile confrontation with Dylan on the walkway. He expected Brenda to be furious, to demand they call the police or the school principal. Instead, Brenda went completely rigid. The glass of orange juice she was holding slipped from her fingers, shattering on the tile floor.

"That boy is a troublemaker, Charles!"
Brenda stammered, her voice shrill as she frantically grabbed paper towels to clean the mess, refusing to look at him.
"How dare he say something like that? You know Sophie is blind! You were the one driving when the truck hit us! Have you forgotten your guilt already?"

The mention of his guilt usually silenced Charles, but today, Brenda's reaction felt performative. It felt like a shield. Charles looked up and saw Sophie standing in the doorway, her sunglasses back on, her face pale. A desperate, wild idea formed in his mind.

Without warning, Charles picked up a heavy ceramic mug from the counter. He held it high, right in Sophie's line of sight, and let it go.

"Watch out!"
he yelled.

Before the mug could crash to the floor, Sophie's hand shot out with flawless speed. She caught the handle perfectly mid-air. The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Slowly, Sophie lowered her hand. She reached up, took off her sunglasses, and looked at Charles with clear, tear-filled eyes.

"I'm sorry, Daddy,"
she whispered.

"I'm sorry, Daddy," she whispered.
