Previously: Searching through a rusted scrapyard, Hannah made a chilling discovery locked inside a wooden crate, setting off a chain of events that led her straight to a shocking family betrayal.

The Face Inside the Box

The sudden thud galvanized Hannah. Terror turned into raw adrenaline. She grabbed a jagged piece of metal from a nearby pile and began hacking desperately at the thick ropes binding the crate. The fibers frayed slowly, agonizingly, but she didn’t stop until the ropes fell away in heavy coils.

Using the metal bar as a lever, she wedged it into the seam of the wooden lid and pried with all her might. With a splintering screech, the wood gave way. Hannah threw the lid aside and gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Bound and gagged, lying in the cramped, dark space, was a young woman. Her eyes were wide with terror, but as the light hit her face, Hannah felt the world spin.

"Clara?"

Hannah choked out. It was her younger sister, Clara, who had vanished three days ago. The family had been told she ran away, but the truth was far more sinister. Hannah quickly pulled the cloth gag from Clara’s mouth and untied her wrists. Clara collapsed into her sister’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.

"He did this, Hannah,"

Clara whispered, her voice hoarse and trembling.

"Richard did this to me."

Richard was their wealthy stepfather, a man respected in the community but feared behind closed doors. Clara explained that she had discovered proof that Richard was using his shipping business to smuggle illegal goods, and he had locked her away here to silence her before she could go to the police.

Before Hannah could process the betrayal, the sound of heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel outside. A car door slammed in the distance.

"He's back,"

Clara whimpered, clinging to Hannah.

"He knows I'm here."

Hannah looked around the desolate scrapyard. There was nowhere to run, and the shadow of their stepfather was already looming over the entrance.
