For an agonizing second, the entire ballroom held its breath. The security guards froze, caught between their orders and the sheer gravity of the moment. Richard’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson. He grabbed Jack by the shoulder of his denim jacket, trying to pull him away from his daughter.

"Get your hands off her! You’re sick, playing mind games with a disabled girl!"

Richard roared, his voice cracking with an odd, frantic panic. But as he pulled, Lily let out a sharp, sudden gasp that echoed through the silent hall.

Her fingers, which had been resting limply on her lap, began to twitch. A tremor ran up her arms. The color was returning to her pale cheeks, and she looked down at her own legs in utter disbelief. "Father..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "I... I can feel my feet."

The crowd erupted into frantic murmurs. Richard’s panic intensified, and instead of rejoicing, he looked terrified.

"Don't listen to him, Lily! It's a trick! Guards, throw this lunatic in jail!"

he screamed, his reaction raising immediate suspicion among the guests.

Jack stood up slowly, keeping a protective hand near Lily.

"Why are you so afraid of her walking, Richard?"

Jack asked, his voice cutting through the noise.

"Is it because the day she stands on her own two feet, you lose control of her mother’s multi-million dollar trust fund?"

A shocked silence fell over the room. The truth hung heavy in the air. For years, Richard had convinced Lily that her spinal injury was permanent, over-medicating her and keeping her isolated to maintain sole guardianship over the massive estate left by her late mother.
