The Secret Behind My Bride's Locked Wooden Mask Shattered Our Family Forever
The Gilded Cage
The grand gothic cathedral of the Vance estate was filled with the cream of New England high society. Sunlight poured through the towering stained-glass windows, casting vibrant hues of crimson and sapphire across the stone floor. Yet, despite the beauty of the morning, an oppressive silence hung over the congregation. I stood at the altar, adjusting the cuffs of my silver and black velvet doublet, my heart hammering against my ribs. Today was the day I was to marry Clara Vance, the mysterious daughter of the billionaire patriarch known to the world as "King Arthur."
Clara had been kept in total isolation for years. Rumors ran rampant through the upper echelons of society, but nothing could have prepared me for the moment the heavy oak doors of the sanctuary creaked open. King Arthur, an elderly man draped in a heavy, gold-trimmed emerald green robe, marched slowly down the aisle. Beside him walked Clara. A collective gasp echoed through the pews. Clara’s head was completely encased in a heavy, dark wooden barrel, secured with thick iron bands and a brass padlock.
"My daughter is now your wife," King Arthur declared, his voice booming through the silent cathedral as he placed her trembling hand in mine.
I was frozen in shock. My father, standing in the front row, shot me a warning glare that silently demanded my cooperation. The priest, pale and trembling, rushed through the vows. When the ceremony concluded, Arthur slipped a small brass key into my palm and whispered, "You may now see your bride." My fingers shook as I reached for the metal latch on the front of the wooden barrel. I turned the key, opened the small door, and peered inside. The horror of what I saw made me stumble back, gasping, "Oh my God."
