Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. He thought she was protecting him, but the truth inside was breathing.

A Suspicious Silence

Leo stared at Maria, his grief momentarily giving way to a cold wave of suspicion. His father, Arthur, had been a robust man, a retired athlete who took meticulous care of his health. The idea of a sudden, highly contagious disease killing him within twenty-four hours felt entirely wrong.

"A contagious disease?"
Leo repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"What disease, Maria? Why wasn't I notified when he was taken to the hospital? Why is there no medical examiner here?"

Maria swallowed hard, her hand instinctively fluttering to her throat.

"It was sudden, Leo. The health department ordered a swift burial. We have to respect their guidelines. Please, step back. The transport team will be here any minute to take him to the crematorium."

At the mention of the crematorium, a frantic, muffled thud echoed from inside the casket. It was faint, almost imperceptible over the hum of the air conditioner, but to Leo, it sounded like a thunderclap. He froze, his eyes locking onto the polished mahogany lid.

"Did you hear that?"
he breathed, pushing Maria aside.

"It’s just the wood settling, Leo! You're hysterical!"
Maria shrieked, her composed facade completely slipping as she tried to block his path. She grabbed his arm, her nails digging into his tuxedo.
"We must leave the room immediately! For your own safety!"

But Leo was no longer listening. He heard it againβ€”a rhythmic, desperate scratching from within the box. The horrifying truth began to dawn on him. His stepmother wasn't trying to protect him from a disease; she was hiding a monstrous crime. He looked around the room, his eyes landing on a heavy brass fireplace poker. Ignoring Maria's screams, he grabbed the metal rod and wedged it beneath the brass lock of the casket.
