The words hung in the damp cemetery air, heavy and impossible. Marian felt the world tilt beneath her feet.

"No, that’s impossible,"

she stammered, shaking her head.

"Andrew didn't have a child. He would have told me. I am his mother!"

The woman, who introduced herself as Rachel, wiped a stray tear from her cheek. She explained that she and Andrew had met while he was working on a long-term project in another state. They had fallen deeply in love, but Andrew had been terrified of his mother's reaction. Marian had always been strict, holding high expectations for her only son, and Andrew feared she would reject Rachel, who came from a humble background.

"He wanted to tell you, Marian. He really did,"

Rachel pleaded, her voice trembling.

"We were planning to come here together, to introduce you to little Lily. But then... the accident happened."

Marian’s chest tightened. The pain of Andrew's sudden car crash was a wound that had never healed. She looked at the toddler, Lily, who was now staring back at her with wide, innocent eyes. Marian felt a jolt run through her spine. The child had the exact same striking blue eyes as Andrew—the same eyes Marian had looked into for forty-five years. Still, defensive walls built over a lifetime of protecting her family rose up.

"I need proof,"

Marian demanded, her voice cracking.

"I cannot just believe a stranger at a graveside."

Rachel reached into her cream coat and pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal.

"This was Andrew's,"

she said softly, handing it to Marian.

"He wrote to you in it. He wanted me to give it to you if anything ever happened to him."
