Previously: Flight nurse Claire Mercer is whisked away on a mysterious twilight flight, only to discover that the husband she buried two years ago is actually aliveβ€”and kept hidden.

The Secluded Sanctuary

The helicopter touched down on a private helipad nestled deep in the snow-dusted pine forests of the Cascade Mountains. Waiting at the edge of the clearing was a sprawling, ultra-modern estate, glowing like a fortress of glass and steel against the dark night. Sterling led Claire through a side entrance and down a sterile, brightly lit corridor that looked more like a cutting-edge intensive care unit than a residential home.

As they reached a set of double glass doors, Claire stopped dead in her tracks. Through the glass, she saw a patient hooked up to a state-of-the-art ventilator. Her heart hammered against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat. The man in the bed, pale and frail, was Julian. Her husband.

"This is impossible," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and rising fury. "Julian died in an avalanche two years ago. I buried him."

Sterling stepped forward, his cold demeanor slipping into one of clinical detachment. "His family's company, Mercer Enterprises, staged the accident, Mrs. Mercer. Your father-in-law could not allow his sole heir to remain married to a middle-class nurse. They brought him here, keeping him under constant medical care to protect the family legacy. But his condition has worsened, and in his rare moments of consciousness, he has begged only for you."

Claire felt a sickening wave of betrayal wash over her. The grief that had consumed her for two years had been a manufactured lie, orchestrated by a ruthless family who deemed her unworthy. Tears of anger and sorrow spilled down her cheeks as she pushed past Sterling and rushed to Julian's bedside, grabbing his cold, limp hand.
