The Web of Deceit Unravels

The silence in the kitchen was deafening, punctuated only by the low hum of the commercial refrigerators. Matteo’s gaze pinned Victoria to the spot.

"What did she just say?"
he asked, his voice dangerously low, a contrast to the storm raging in his eyes.

Victoria scoffed, though a flicker of fear crossed her eyes. She adjusted her diamond necklace, trying to regain her composure.

"She’s delusional, Matteo. She abandoned your baby five years ago. I found her living on the streets and offered her a job. I was being charitable!"

"Charitable?"
Matteo roared, the sound echoing off the steel walls. He gestured to the dark purple bruise on Elena's cheek.
"You call keeping her hidden in a basement and beating her charity?"

Elena shrank back, but the truth could no longer be contained.

"She threatened me, Matteo,"
she sobbed.
"Five years ago, when our daughter Sophia was born, Victoria told me you would take her away and destroy my family if I didn't disappear. She paid off the hospital staff to tell you I ran away. Then, last month, she found me again. She took Sophia from my sister's house and said if I didn't work here, silent and invisible, I would never see my daughter again."

Matteo felt the world tilt on its axis. For five years, he had lived in grief, believing the love of his life had abandoned him and their newborn baby. He had raised Sophia alone, eventually falling into a relationship of convenience with Victoria, a woman of his own social standing. Now, he realized the monster he was about to marry had orchestrated the entire tragedy.

Victoria took a step back, her face pale.

"She has no proof, Matteo! Who will the courts believe? A prestigious socialite or a disgraced, penniless kitchen maid?"
