An Unexpected Customer

The morning rush at the majestic Metropolitan Trust Bank was winding down when eight-year-old Leo walked through the heavy glass doors. Wearing a simple grey t-shirt and holding a mysterious gold envelope tightly against his chest, the young boy looked entirely out of place in the grand, high-ceilinged marble lobby. Standing beside him was Officer Davis, a local security guard who had found the boy wandering near the entrance and decided to escort him inside to find his parents.

Instead of looking for a guardian, Leo marched straight up to the counter where Arthur, a thirty-four-year-old teller with sandy blonde hair, was organizing his station. Arthur looked down, his brow furrowing in immediate annoyance. He didn't have time for games.

"Leave. Now," Arthur commanded, his voice tense and low, hoping to dismiss the child before a crowd gathered.

But Leo didn't flinch. He gripped the counter, looking up with fierce determination.

"I want to check my account," Leo replied, his voice ringing clearly through the quiet lobby.

Arthur sighed, reaching out his hand to take whatever toy or drawing the boy was holding. But as his fingers brushed the heavy, metallic paper of the gold envelope, his attitude shifted instantly. The paper was embossed with a rare, vintage seal—a design only issued to the bank's most exclusive founding clients decades ago. Arthur's breath hitched.

"Where did you get this?" Arthur demanded, his eyes wide.
"It is mine. My grandmother left it for me," Leo answered simply.

Arthur's fingers began flying across his mechanical keyboard. He punched in the serial number etched on the back of the envelope, his heart hammering against his ribs. The screen flickered, loading a restricted database that required administrative clearance. As the security prompts flashed red on his monitor, Arthur's face drained of color. He stared at the screen, then at the innocent boy standing before him, realizing that this gold envelope held a secret that could ruin lives—or save them.
