Previously: At her husband's rainy funeral, Rachel is horrified when her six-year-old daughter Emily flees with a locked wooden box, uncovering a chilling truth that her brother-in-law desperately wanted to bury.

The voice was undeniably Arthur's. It had been recorded only hours before his fatal car accident. Thomas froze a few feet away, his face turning a ghostly shade of white as the recording continued to play over the sound of the falling rain.

"Rachel, if you are hearing this, it means my brother finally did what he always threatened to do," Arthur's voice rasped from the tiny speaker. "The brakes on my car did not fail by accident. Thomas knew I discovered his embezzlement of the family trust. Do not trust him."

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered mourners. I looked up from the mud, my gaze locking onto Thomas. The grief that had consumed me for days instantly crystallized into a cold, burning fury.

"This is absurd!" Thomas stammered, stepping forward, his hands shaking violently. "Arthur was out of his mind! He was paranoid! Rachel, give me that box before you make a fool of yourself."

He lunged to grab the box, but I shielded Emily with my body.

"Get away from us!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the ancient tombstones. "Don't you dare touch her!"

Thomas leaned down, his eyes dark with a terrifying desperation. Under his breath, so only I could hear, he whispered a venomous threat.

"You think anyone will believe a dead man's recording over me? I control the family estate, Rachel. I will tie you up in court until you are penniless, and then I will take Emily away from you. Give me the box, or I will destroy your life."

I looked down at the mud. Among the scattered chess pieces, the black king had split in two from the fall. Inside its hollowed chamber, a small silver key and a tightly rolled piece of paper gleamed in the gray light. Thomas saw it too. He bent down to snatch it, his fingers clawing at the muddy earth.
