Previously: At her father's rainy funeral, eight-year-old Chloe runs to save a wooden box, revealing a shocking family secret that her grieving mother Clara never expected to face.

The Battle for the Legacy

Clara hurried Chloe away from the graveyard, ignoring Julian’s furious demands to hand over the chess set. Back in the chilly safety of their living room, the house felt cavernously empty without Arthur. Chloe sat on the rug, shivering in her muddy clothes, carefully drying each wooden chess piece with a towel. Clara watched her daughter, the ghostly whisper still echoing in her mind. Arthur had been a master chess player, but he had rarely played with anyone other than Chloe.

"Daddy told me the king holds the crown,"

Chloe said quietly, her voice small but certain.

"He said if he ever had to go away, I had to protect the king from Uncle Julian."

Before Clara could ask what she meant, a heavy, demanding knock shook the front door. Clara peered through the window. Julian stood on the porch, flanked by a tall man holding a briefcase. Clara opened the door slightly, keeping the security chain locked.

"What do you want, Julian? We are grieving."

Julian sneered, tapping the wooden doorframe.

"I want what belongs to my family, Clara. Arthur signed over the entire estate, including this house, to me before he died. I have the power of attorney. You have twenty-four hours to vacate."
"That's a lie! Arthur would never leave us homeless,"

Clara cried, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"The courts will decide that,"

Julian replied coldly.

"And I know the girl took Arthur's personal chess set from the study. It’s a family heirloom. Hand it over, or I’ll have the police remove you for theft right now."

Clara closed the door, her hands shaking violently. She turned to the coffee table where the chess pieces lay. She picked up the black king. It was indeed heavier than the other pieces. As her trembling fingers turned it over, she noticed a faint seam near the base of the carved crown. She twisted it, and with a soft click, the bottom of the piece began to unscrew.
