Previously: When eight-year-old Clara interrupts her father's funeral to save a mysterious wooden box, Eleanor uncovers a heartbreaking family secret her late husband desperately tried to hide from his greedy relatives.

The Confrontation in the Mud

Richard marched through the mud, his expensive leather shoes ruined, his eyes burning with a cruel triumph. He snatched the wooden box from the ground, ignoring Clara’s cries, but Eleanor quickly stood between them, shielding her daughter from her brother-in-law's wrath.

"Get away from her, Richard!" Eleanor demanded, her voice shaking but resolute. "That box belongs to Clara. Arthur made those chess pieces for her."
"This box is family property, Eleanor," Richard sneered, his lawyers flanking him like vultures. "Arthur died with nothing but debts to his name. Everything he owned now belongs to the family corporation. If you interfere, my lawyers will ensure you lose custody of Clara for being an unfit, destitute mother."

The threat struck Eleanor like a physical blow. She looked down at Clara, who was shivering in the rain, clutching Eleanor's sodden skirts.

"Mommy," Clara whispered, tugging at Eleanor's black dress. "Look at the King. Daddy said the King holds the key."

Eleanor looked at the muddy ground where the hand-carved black King lay. She knelt, snatching it up before Richard's guards could react. The piece felt unusually heavy, and as her fingers brushed against the base, she felt a small, unnatural seam. Before Richard could command his security guards to seize them, the heavy rumble of an engine broke the tension. A sleek black limousine pulled up to the edge of the cemetery path.

The door opened, and an elderly man with a silver-topped cane stepped out. It was Harrison Vance, the reclusive patriarch of the family who had supposedly cut Arthur off years ago.

"Stand down, Richard," Harrison boomed, his voice cutting through the storm.

Richard turned pale, stepping back. "Grandfather? What are you doing here?" Harrison ignored his grandson, walking straight toward Eleanor and Clara. He looked at the carved King in Eleanor's hand and smiled sadly.

"Arthur always was the smartest of us," Harrison said softly. "He knew Richard would try to rob you. That chess set isn't just a toy, Eleanor. It is the key to everything Arthur built in secret."
