Previously: Seven years after fleeing her past, Hannah's peaceful life on a remote homestead is shattered when the man she once loved tracks her down—and discovers the son she kept secret.

The Threat to the Homestead

The silence that followed Arthur’s question was deafening. Hannah looked down at her son, whose innocent face mirrored the man standing before them. Slowly, she nodded. "Yes, Arthur. He is your son," she admitted, her voice cracking under the weight of the truth she had guarded for so long.

Arthur fell to his knees in the dirt, ignoring how the dust ruined his expensive suit. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he reached out a trembling hand toward Billy, though he didn't dare touch him. But the emotional reunion was brutally interrupted. The hum of another engine echoed down the dirt road, and a sleek black sedan pulled up behind Arthur's SUV.

The door opened, and a woman stepped out. It was Victoria, Arthur’s cold and powerful mother. She looked at the rustic cabin with utter disgust before turning her icy glare onto Hannah and Billy. She held a thick manila folder in her hands.

"I knew Arthur’s obsession with finding you would lead us straight to the boy," Victoria said, her voice dripping with venom. "And now that we know the heir to the family fortune is living in a shack, we are taking him."

Hannah felt a cold dread wash over her. She clutched Billy tighter, her knuckles turning white. "You have no right!" she screamed. "You threatened my family and forced me to run!"

Arthur stood up, his face pale as he turned to his mother.

"What is she talking about, Mother? You told me Hannah took money and abandoned me!"

Victoria didn't flinch. She tapped the folder.

"I did what was necessary to protect our family legacy. And now, I have the legal power to take custody of this child. You will both sign him over, or I will ruin what little life you have left here."
